Roofing manufacturers have started making ENERGY STAR shingles.

There are only a few shingles that have an ENERGY STAR rating. A shingle can be given an ENERGY STAR rating if it saves the consumer money by decreasing their energy usage. Energy is usually produced by burning fossil fuels like natural gas, oil and coal. By decreasing the amount of fossil fues burned, we also help protect the environment. In order for a manufacturer to be able to place an ENERGY STAR label on to their product, the product has to meet or exceed the energy-efficieny guidelines that are set up by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the DOE (Department of Energy).

Shingles can't be labeled ENERGY STAR shingles until they meet specific reflectivity requirements. These are the reflectivity requirements for shinges:

• Low Slope Roofs (<= 2:12 slope): >= 0.65 intial solar reflectance & third year solar reflectance >= 0.50
• Steep Slope Roofs (>= 2:12 slope): >= 0.25 intial solar reflectance & third year solar reflectance >= 0.15
