Tubular Skylights
How to choose a natural light tubular skylight

by Angela Stiegman on 9/28/2009

Tubular skylights are an excellent way to get natural sunlight into parts of your home that don't have any windows. They can be installed on almost any roof and can bring light into almost any room that is not located more than 20 foot from the roof deck. Using tubular skylights will save you money by reducing the amount of work your HVAC unit has to perform.

Natural lighting is good for depression, "winter blahs", and overall general health. It also adds style, beauty and value to a home. With tubular skylights, you can have the effect of natural lighting without the worry of UV damage to your possesions.

What is a tubular skylight?

Tubular skylights have a roof-mounted UV resistance dome that collects light from the sun no matter what it's position is in the sky. The dome attaches to a tunnel that has a highly reflective that helps the sunlight shine down the tube more efficiently. Tubular skylight tunnels can be ridigid or flexible. They help guide the sunlight through the attic down to the ceiling where a diffuser distributes the light evenly throught the room. From the inside of the house, the diffuser looks like a convential light fixture. There is also an optional light kit can be added to your tubular skylight that will allow you to have electrical light come throught the diffuser during the night.

Where are the best places for a tubular skylight?

Have you ever wanted to get natural sunlight into a room or closet where you can't install a window or skylight? Those types of areas are perfect for a tubular skylights. Bring natural sunlight to a closet, bathroom, hallway, laundry room, or any other room that doesn't have much light.

Should I choose a rigid or flexible tubular skylight?

Tubular skylight tunnels come in rigid and flexible forms. Rigid tunnels provide brighter, whiter light, are the best for long runs, and are used for the areas with less sunlight (like when you tubular skylight will be on the north side of your roof). Flexible tunnels are easy and quickly installed, bend around obstructions in the attic, and are used for the areas with alot of sun. Most people perfer to install rigid tunnels because they let in more light, but if you have to wrap the tunnel around trusses or other opstacles, pick the flexible tunnel type of tubular skylight.

The longest recommended tunnel length is 12' long for a 22" wide tubular skylight, and 10' long for a 14" tubular skylight. Tubular skylight tunnels should NEVER be spliced together..

What are the differences between low and high profile tubular skylights?

A low profile tubular skylight is best for a south facing roof. It's installs parallel to the roof, so this design blends perfectly into the roofline. A low profile tubular skylight is made of a one piece flashing and can be used with a rigid tunnel or flexible tunnel.

A pitched tubular skylight is best for providing more even lighting throughout the day. This type also provides a straighter tunnel. A pitched tubular skylight is also made of a one piece flashing can can be used with a rigid tunnel or a flexible tunnel.

Most tubular skylights can be installed on roof slopes from 3:12 to 8:12. Velux SunTunnels, the tubular skylights that Reese Wholesale stocks, will adjust to fit 3:12 to 8:12 roof slopes. One great thing about Velux SunTunnels is that it can be adjusted on the roof or inside that attic to match the roof's slope.

Tubular skylight prices, why your missing light if your using a cheap tubular skylight.

Overtime skylight's that use shortcuts to save on cost definitly show it. The dome will turn yellow and be more prone to cracks and damage from weather. You will also find that tunnels of cheap tubular skylights have a tendancy to delaminate. This delaminiation causes less light to travel throught the tunnel and out the other side. Other common problem with cheap tubular skylights is the diffuser turns yellow because of the UV light that comes down through the tunnel. All of this factores will reduce the amount of light your tubular skylight produces.

Reese Wholesale has chosen Velux's tubular skylight because they are a very reliable company that always produces a quality product. Velux SunTunnels meet or exceed all Energy Star guidelines in all climate zones. As an added piece of mind, Velux SunTunnels also come with a 10 year warranty.
